Does Health Connect sync drain my battery?

Sync here means reading a few numbers from a store that is already on your phone.

Updated 27 September 2026 · 3 min read

Short answer

No, not measurably. Health Connect is an on-device store on Android, so each sync is a local database read over the device bus — no network request is made, and the release build has no internet permission. Sync runs on schedule or on demand, not as a persistent connection.

What a sync actually moves

Three categories: steps, hydration and sleep. A sync reads the current values from Health Connect, compares them against the day's targets, and updates the habit that depends on them. That is a handful of numbers per day — the kind of volume that is trivially small next to a single image upload.

Why the cost stays low

  • No network request. The radio is never engaged, because Health Connect is a local database on the device and the app holds no internet permission to make a request with.
  • No persistent connection. Sync happens on schedule or when you ask for it, then the work finishes. Nothing is held open waiting for the next packet.
  • Local reads. Data travels over the same internal device bus as any other on-device database query.
  • Tiny payloads. A few step, sleep and hydration values — no media, no logs, no batched uploads.

What you would notice in practice

Nothing specific. The work is a short burst of local reading and writing, comparable to any other app that queries a database on the phone. If you never connect Health Connect, the feature does nothing at all and the cost is zero; you can leave it switched off and every other part of the app behaves the same.

We are deliberately not quoting milliamp-hour figures here. Battery use depends on the handset, the Android version and what else the phone is doing, and a precise number without a controlled measurement on your device would be a guess dressed up as a result.

Does Health Connect upload my steps anywhere?

Not through Steady Ember. Health Connect is an on-device store, and the sync is a read from that store with no network request behind it. The release build does not request the internet permission, so steps, sleep and hydration stay on the phone unless you export them yourself.
